What is latest service pack for exchange 2003?
-The latest service pack for Exchange is SP2.

Can Exchange 2003 be installed on a Domain Controller, is it recommended explain why you would or would not do this?
- Installing Exchange on a Domain Controller is not recommended according to KB82279 that states using DCPROMO on a member server with Exchange or demoting a domain controller to a member server will result on loosing functionality in Exchange and it is not supported by Microsoft.
- When you install IIS on a DC prior to installing Exchange, you will begin generating event log errors regarding write failures to the persistent cache
- If you have Exchange Server installed on a DC, you will note that it takes much longer for the computer to restart or shutdown. This is because Active Directory shuts down before Exchange has an opportunity to completely stop, and this will cause several Exchange services to have an extended termination time as their requests to Active Directory time out. The workaround for this is to stop Exchange services prior to shutdown or restart
Why Exchange needs transaction logs?
- Transaction logs on Exchange server were designed to write all transactions to these log files and commit the changes to the databases When the system allows. When a message is sent, the transaction is first recorded in the transaction logs. Until transaction is committed to the Exchange database, the only existence of this data is in the system memory and the transaction logs. These transaction logs are crucial to the recovery of a failed Exchange server, whether it was a minor crash that required a reboot, or a more catastrophic failure requiring deployment of the disaster recovery plans. The same goes for other transactions such as received messages, deleted items and messages moved to different folders.
How many SG (storage Group) up to Exchange support (I am expecting to be asked what version here) and How Many MS (Mail Stores) in each SG?
- On Exchange 2003 Enterprise Server : Support up to 4 Storage Groups Up to 19 Mail Store
- On a Standard Exchange 2003 Server: it supports 1 Storage Groups 4 Mail Store
- Exchange 2007 can support up to 50 Storage Groups 249 Mail Store

What is the size of Transaction logs?
- Exchange transaction log files have a fixed size. For Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 and all earlier versions of Exchange Server, this size is exactly 5 megabytes. When a transaction log is full, the transaction log is renamed with a numeric sequence number, and a new current log is generated
In Exchange 2007, Microsoft lower the transaction log size to 1MB for this new feature called log shipping, which is the technology behind a couple of new features called local continuous replication (LCR) and cluster continuous replication (CCR).
Is it possible to rename an Exchange server?
Even with Exchange 2003 in native mode, you still can't rename the Exchange organization. You would need to totally uninstall Exchange, clean up the server, and reinstall Exchange with the new organization name.
What is a Query base distribution Group?
Query-based distribution group allows you to use an LDAP query to dynamically build membership in the distribution group (for example All employees with a special group membership). Using query-based distribution groups we can reduce the administration costs dramatically. However a Query-based Distribution Group needs more Server resources like CPU power and RAM.
What utility you would use the repair Exchange database (If a database is in a "Dirty Shutdown" state)?
The utility used is the life saver eseutil /mh magic command
Name of the Default Exchange databases?
The default name is Priv1.edb and Priv1.stm
If client is telling you they are receiving, "Outlook is retrieving data from exchange server" how can you trouble shoot the issue?
Outlook must perform several operations against the Exchange server to retrieve the contents of a folder. Therefore, when there are many items in a folder, additional processing is required to respond to the Outlook requests according MS KB905803.
The following list includes ways that you can help manage the number of items in folder:
Use folder hierarchies to help keep the number of items in a folder to the recommended values.
Use mailbox manager policies
Use client-based archiving solutions.
Use mailbox size limits.
Also, it is recommended that we maintain a range of 3,500 to 5,000 items in a folder depending on the capacity of the Exchange Server environment
What port SMTP protocol use?
SMTP uses port 25
What is RFC for SMTP ( this is just for shake up)?
It's RFC 821, RFC 2821
